Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Oversized paperback, 333 pages, NOT ex-library. Book is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Minor light handling wear only. -- This is the first complete English translation of the extensive correspondence between two influential figures in 20th-century music and cultural administration. The text documents the relationship between the grandson of Richard Wagner and a prominent arts administrator of the Weimar Republic, tracking their lives from their initial collaboration in Berlin through their shared experiences as exiles following the rise of the Nazi regime in 1933. The letters provide a primary source account of the challenges faced by intellectuals under political pressure, highlighting their successful efforts to bypass state persecution by relocating to Prague, Switzerland, and eventually Palestine. A significant focus of the exchange is the development of international music education, detailing the specific "birth pains" and conceptual genealogy that led to the founding of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) in 1953. The narrative is further enriched by accounts of the post-war attempt to democratise the Bayreuth Festival and the personal rediscovery of Yiddish and Hebrew cultural traditions following a move to the Middle East. By preserving these unedited communications, the book serves as a vital archival record of the intersection between European musical heritage, democratic conviction, and the resilience of artistic institutions during the mid-20th century.…

"This correspondence, most of it written during the Third Reich, tells the story of Richard Wagner's grandson, Franz W. Beidler, and Leo Kestenberg, probably the most effective, progressive, and grandiose arts administrator in the history of Germany.
