Clearly following the lead of Johnson, Ellis, and Campbell in their anthologies of English poetry, this collection begins with Cotton Mather, Michael Wigglesworth, and their colleagues, and continues along roughly chronological lines to include the very early poetry of Longfellow and Whittier. The sole entry under Francis Scott Key is The Star Spangled Banner, Poe's Tamerlane receives a very early mention on page 405 in the list of works by American Poets, which has been called the first bibliography of American poetry.
