Von der Goltz verstarb am 19. April 1916 in seinem Hauptquartier in Bagdad an einer Typhusinfektion.In Deutschland sind die Einsätze deutscher Truppen im Irak und in Persien im Ersten Weltkrieg weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten.
