Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. ix+502 pages with photographs, facsimiles and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with black lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Edited by King Hendricks, and Irving Shepard. First edition. Dead at 40, the author of fifty books and the tragic hero of an ever-growing legend, Jack London continues to fascinate the world's readers. This collection of his letters, dating from 1899 to 1916, give a unique insight into the life and beliefs of a wild swan of literature. Nearly four hundred letters are made available, many for the first time. Jack London's life often exceecded the variety and excitement of his novels. Oyster pirate, sealer, gold prospector, tramp, idol of the masses, revolutionary prophet: all that he had been is well known but remains extraordinarily nonetheless. If he had lived another year he might well have been buried near John Reed by the Kremlin walls. Of all the writers of our century, London had "star quality" and it is the real test of his power that humble people continue to read him with delight. The letters in this volume are arranged chronologically to provide an almost continuous narrative. They bring the immediacy of a living, often troubled voice and excitement of literary discovery. Condition: Spine extremities sunned and lightly rubbed. Jacket lightly soiled, corners chipped, price clipped else very good in like jacket.…
