A single issue of this magazine featuring articles such as 'Has Islam a Future,' examining Islam and its role in the Western world; 'The Negro Question in the South,' studying the treatment of African-Americans in the South during Reconstruction and after, especially in relation to politics and the political parties; 'The social and economic influences of the bicycle;' and a lengthy section 'Symposium on Women's Dress,' examining women's fashions and their constrictive nature, as well as their hindrance on college women versus college men, and including a section on new possible, less constricting fashions for women (with a few illustrations). The Arena was a progressive magazine published and edited by Benjamin Orange Flower in the late 1800's, noted for examining various social causes of the time. GOOD condition, ex-historical society, with a stamp, blindstamp and faint call letters in pencil on the front cover. Minor soiling, some darkening and a few stray pencil marks to the front cover. Minor chipping and scuffing along the extremities. Spine darkened. Interior solid with minor toning. A small tear present in the fore edge margin of one page.…

Pebbled black cloth; light rubbing to boards; residue from removed sticker at lower spine with some shallow overlap onto adjoining lower boards; slight dulling/flaking to front board and spine's stamping but all still easily legible. Some foxing to text block edges; past owner's name/address label affixed to front pastedown; interior pages are clean. Binding is firm. A very good copy. Laid-in at front endpapers is the author's promotional brochure/order form announcing the first printing of Volume III and reprintings of preceding Volumes I and II. With Preface, a few b/w plates, and Index. Features fourteen essays regarding various facets of regional history of which the more interesting titles are: "Some Economic and Social Aspects of the History of Cullman, Alabama" by John Clinton Bright; "An Early Fayette County Home" by Marguerite T.
