From the blurb For many years a vague belief circulated among photography buffs and photo-researchers to the effect that in the early days there had grown up in Canada a remarkable body of talented amateur photographers, whose work was now lost, but who in their day had far surpassed in artistic sensitivity, in technical skill, and in innovative boldness the work of their professional contemporaries. In 1977 a team of researchers at Public Archives Canada set out to test the validity of this belief, to track down any photos that might still be preserved in forgotten drawers and attics, and to restore to public awareness and admiration this forgotten legacy. AS collection after collection emerged from its obscure place of refuge all doubt about the importance of the amateur in the history of Canadian photography vanished.
