Eingebettet in die Zürcher Theaterszene der 20er bis 40er Jahre erscheint das Laien-Wandertheater 'Freie Bühne' als Prototyp eines immer wieder geforderten schweizerischen Berufs-Wandertheaters, in welches es sich nicht zuletzt mangels ausreichender Unterstützung allerdings nie umbilden konnte. Die Freie Bühne wurde eine Wegbereiterin des politischen Cabarets in der Schweiz, auch des über die Grenzen hinaus bekannten 'Cornichon'. Seit kurzem zugängliche Akten und Abhörprotokolle der Kriegszeit dokumentieren die Überwachung des Cornichon, brechen aber zugleich das Monopol der Erinnerungen ehemals Beteiligter: War das Cornichon ein Hort des politischen Widerstandes oder eher ein Cabaret mit Freiräumen in innenpolitischen Belangen Die Chronik des Welttheaters reicht von 1924 bis in das Jahr 2000 hinein, wobei der Neufassung von Thomas Hürlimann in der Regie von Volker Hesse die Hälfte des Textes gewidmet ist.
