W latach 1841-1851 redagowal wilenskie "Athenaeum". Od 1851 mieszkal w Warszawie, zas od 1853 mieszkal w Zytomierzu, gdzie pelnil rozne wazne funkcje spoleczne i urzedowe, od 1860 do 1863 w Warszawie (byl redaktorem "Gazety Codziennej" i "Gazety Polskiej"), potem zamieszkal w Dreznie (w 1886 przyjal obywatelstwo saskie). Aresztowany w Berlinie 13.06.1883 i skazany w procesie lipskim w maju 1884 na kare 3 i pol roku twierdzy za zdrade stanu za wspolprace z wywiadem francuskim. W dniu 7.11.1885 otrzymal przerwe w karze, podrozowal do Wloch i Szwajcarii, zmarl w Genewie na zapalenie pluc. Debiutowal literacko w 1831, autor 223 powiesci i wielu innych utworow literackich, rowniez aktywny i plodny publicysta, wybitny kolekcjoner glownie grafiki i rysunku; zob.
