Otto Kreefft was born in Java (then the Dutch East Indies). When Japan invaded in 1941, he was a conscript in an anti‑aircraft unit. After the KNIL surrendered, he was taken prisoner and transported to Burma to work on the Burma-Thailand Railway, also known as the Death Railway. He survived captivity and was recovered in Thailand at the end of WWII. His later life included evacuation to the Netherlands in 1957 after Indonesian independence.
