The stamps are affixed to the 3-3/4 inch high by 6-1/2 inch wide "United Nations / Nations Unies / New York" envelope. Both stamps bear the "United Nations / New York" and "First Day of Issue" cancellation stamps. The envelope is inscribed to Fridolf Johnson by Kurt Plowitz. "For Fridolf from Ti-Tu-Plowitz, designer". Fine. The Czech-born American artist Kurt Plowitz (1912-1969) was a prominent graphic artist who worked for the United Nations Presentation Unit. Plowitz designed several UN commemorative issues during the 1950's. An illustrator and artist as well as a fine pressman, the recipient Fridolf Johnson was an editor of American Artist Magazine until his retirement in the 1970's. As a graphic artist, he designed title panels for Hollywood movies and art & typography for advertising as well as dust jacket illustrations.
