Small circular marks to the foot of the spines where lib labels have been removed, light fading and dull gilt to each of the first 7 volumes. An (Ex) Reference Lib label to each front pastedown and the occasional small (c. 0.5cm) circular lib stamp - minimal marks - the volumes show very little signs of use, internally very clean and tight. Volumes 8 and 9 are a darker red, but all volumes have some external fading. The Second Edition of "Halkett & Laing" , and remains the best and fullest guide known. Top edges gilt.A set of seven volumes of Halkett and Laing's Dictionary of Anonymous and Pseudonymous English Literature, edited and enlarged by Dr James Kennedy, W. A. Smith and A. F. Johnson.After Samuel Halkett's death in 1871, the materials he collected for a dictionary of anonymous literature were given to John Laing. Laing enlarged the collection but passed away before the work was published. The work was then edited and published by Laing's daughter.This set comprises volumes I to VI (published 1926 to 1932) of the main volumes, which contain the alphabetically arranged dictionary, with a supplement to the rear of volume VI. In addition, this set includes volume VII (published 1934), which contains the index (by authors, initials and pseudonyms) and the second supplement. Two extra volumes, not included in this set, were later added in 1956 and 1962. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, smart, with very light shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are untrimmed but very bright and clean. Dust wrappers are generally smart, with light chipping to the wraps, more so to the head and tail of the spine, and closed tears to the flyleaves. Golf book. With an introduction by Andrew Lang. Frederick Guthrie Tait (1870-1900) was born in Edinburgh, the son of a leading physicist and amateur golfer. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Sedbergh before entering RMA, Sandhurst, where he introduced golf. A very powerful and long hitter, at the R&A, St Andrews, on Jan 11, 1893, he hit the ball 250 yards onto frozen ground stopping 341 yards from the tee, thereby refuting his father's calculation that 190 yards was the maximum possible flight of a ball. Tait won the the Amateur Championship twice (1896, 1898), finished third in the Open Championship twice (1896, 1897) and was leading amateur in the same competition six times. He was also a crack shot and a first-class rugby player. Tait was killed in action at Koodoosbergh during the second Boer War. In a pocket on his dead body was found a letter showing the paw marks of his favourite dog "Nails". All profits from original sales of this book were donated to the Black Watch Widows' and Orphans' Fund. First Edition. 8vo. 304pp. Portrait frontis. (tissue-guard), 16 plates (tissue-guards).
