This includes his involvement in key court cases, most notably the Somersett case of 1772, where the ruling established that a slave could not be forcibly removed from England against their will. Lascelles covers Sharp's role in the wider abolitionist movement, including his co-founding and chairmanship of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1787. Sharp's activism was heavily influenced by his Evangelical Christian beliefs. The book discusses how he used religious and natural law arguments, rather than just legal ones, to argue that slavery was incompatible with the English constitution and Christian principles. This book details Sharp's extensive writings, such as his pamphlet A Representation of the Injustice and Dangerous Tendency of Tolerating Slavery (1769), which was the first major anti-slavery work by a British writer.
