Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A USABLE PAST AMERICAN FOLK ART COLBY COLLEGE MUSEUM OF ART 2016 1ST SHRINK WRAP. Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: This catalogue presents new research on the Colby College Museum of Art s important collection of paintings-sculptures-needleworks-and works on paper by self-trained artists working primarily in the eastern part of the United States during the long nineteenth century. Please find then: A Usable Past American Folk Art at the Colby College Museum of Art edited by Lauren Lessing and essays by a wide variety of specialist-experts and collectors. This large hard cover book (9 ¾ x 12 ¼ inches 163 pages) was published by the Colby College Museum of Art dated 2016 to coincide with an exhibition of the same name and thus apparently a First Edition. The book is bound in dark red cloth with gilt titles on the spine and protected by a colorful pictorial dust jacket. This copy is still in the shrink wrap, but I have a personal copy as well which has allowed me to show and tell you what the book includes. It is richly illustrated with color plates throughout. Condition: As it is still in the shrink wrap and shows no bumping to the corners or spine tips, it is in near fine or like new condition.

Hardcover. red cloth boards w/ gilt spine printing. book vii, 163 w/ color & bw illustrations. illustrated color dustjacket. The following descriptive paragraph from the dust jacket flap: 'Produced and circulated outside the elite sphere of fine art, folk art appealed to the middle-class Americans who were eager to express their identities, interests, and social ambitions through these decorative, vernacular objects. This catalogue presents new research on the Colby College Museum of Art's important collection of paintings, sculptures, needleworks, and works on paper by self-trained artists working primarily in the eastern part of the United States during the long nineteenth century. Essays by Seth A. Thayer, Jr., and Elizabeth Finch investigate the formation, evolving interpretation, and intended uses of the American Heritage Collection of Edith Kemper Jetté and Ellerton Marcel Jetté - one of the earliest gifts to enter the Colby Museum and the basis of its folk art collection. A third essay by Tanya Sheehan explores the complex relationship between folk art, fine art, and American visual culture. More than sixty catalogue entries by scholars, curators, and Colby students identify previously unknown makers and subjects, uncover new information about the construction and original contexts of works in the collection, and enlarge our understanding of what these artworks meant for the people who made and displayed them. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st. Pictorial boards, 183 pages, illustrations (some colour); 29 cm. Catalogue of an exhibition held September 12, 2012 to January 7, 2013 at the Newark Museum; and other venues. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "In the aftermath of the Civil War, the American girl seemed transformed at once more introspective and adventurous than her counterpart of the previous generation. For the first time, girls claimed the attention of genre artists, and though the culture still prized the demure female child of the past, complementary images of angel and tomboy emerged as competing visions of this new generation. 'Angels and Tomboys' explores the diverse ways 19th-century artists portrayed girls, from the sentimental stereotype to the free-spirited individual. Works by John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer and others reveal a new, provocative psychological element not found in early Victorian portraiture, while the tomboys in Lilly Martin Spencer's paintings and the angels by John George Brown underscore the complexity of young girlhood." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Collectible.

Hardcover. Zustand: New, in shrinkwrap. Quarto. Hardcover. Crimson cloth/boards; gilt lettering. Crimson, color-illus. dj with black/white lettering on spine. vii, 163 pp. with color images throughout. Catalogue from the exhibition held July 2016 to January 2017. "A Usable Past brings together paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by self-trained artists working in the eastern part of what is now the United States during the long nineteenth century. Produced and originally circulated outside the elite sphere of fine art, these objects emerged from vernacular traditions that favored decorative aesthetics over mimesis. In the twentieth century, artists, scholars, and collectors came to believe that artworks like these expressed such supposedly quintessential American values as industriousness and ingenuity, and that they also served as native precursors to Modernism. A Usable Past features highlights of the Museum's extensive holdings of folk art of the United States supplemented by loans from distinguished New England collections. The exhibition includes many artworks from the American Heritage collection of Edith and Ellerton Jetté-one of the earliest collections to enter the Colby College Museum of Art." - from the Colby College web site.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. With more than 170 artworks and commissioned texts, including original poems, by 98 writers and artists--such as Barbara Haskell, Bill Berkson, Carol Troyen, Michael Leja, Rachael Ziady DeLue, Geoffrey Batchen, Sanford Schwartz, Anne M. Wagner, Ron Padgett, Irving Sandler and Lydia Yee--Art at Colby highlights artworks that represent the full scope of the museum's superb holdings. The works span the entire history of American art (with a particularly fine selection of painting from New York since 1960), and also include examples of European and Asian works. Texts by a range of writers--scholars, curators, critics and artists--are paired with gorgeous reproductions of pieces from the collection: James Cuno on Henri Fantin-Latour, for instance, Rackstraw Downes on John Marin, Alex Katz on Winslow Homer and Richard Hell on Joe Brainard.
