Zustand: New. The book consists of ten chapters that are based mainly on new sources. The chapters discuss the economic activities of Jews and non-Jews in Constantinople and Smyrna during the long eighteenth century (1700-1820). The chapters also contain information relating to Salonica. The primary material for the volume was the Levant Company's official correspondence exchanged between its administration and employees, political authorities in England and the Sublime Porte. This work is based also on archival research of Jewish sources, mainly the Responsa literature, in order to understand the various topics under discussion. Jews frequently appear in these studies due to their place in local and international trade and because of the close ties between Jewish brokers and European merchants. The ten chapters of the book are based on undisclosed documentation and deal mainly with the Jews of Constantinople and secondarily also with the Jews of Smyrna, with slight reference also to the Jews of Salonica. The purpose of the research is to point out the deep involvement of the Jews in these cities in trade and money lending, and to study the connections of Jewish brokers, merchants, and Sarrafs in the above cities with the British merchants in the period under discussion. Zustand: New. The book discusses the extensive evangelical, educational, medical and philanthropic activities of three Protestant missionary organizations in Jewish society in Ottoman Empire during the nineteenth century up to the First World War. The study concentrates on the three large Jewish communities of Istanbul, Salonika and Izmir. It covers many aspects of Jewish life, such as the legal and social status of Jews in Ottoman Empire, the traditional and modern education, intra-communal bitter disputes, the process of secularization, class affiliation, family life and status of women. The focus of the research is on the missionaries' achievements and failure. Leah Bornstein Makovetsky emphasizes the Jewish communities response to the missionaries' various activities and examines the ways in which the Jewish leadership fought against any Christian influence on Jewish society in the course of decades in which far-reaching political, social and religious changes have taken place both in the Ottoman Empire and in Ottoman Jewish society. The book shows that protestant missionaries arrived in the Ottoman Empire with firm convictions and grandiose plans, and foremost to lead to conversion of many Jews. At the same time the research considers the question of whether the Protestant mission had any real chance of success in its work among the Jews of Istanbul, Salonika and Izmir. The data and most of the information cited in the book are drawn largely from missionary reports and journals, and from Jewish sources, especially Responsa literature and Jewish Journals. Zustand: New. This book traces the rise and activity of the gvirim - the wealthy Jewish elite of Istanbul during the long eighteenth century (1680-1830). Drawing on diverse printed and archival sources, it examines how this influential stratum operated amid political, military, and economic upheavals in the Ottoman Empire and within a vibrant multiethnic metropolis where the empire's largest Jewish community faced wars, epidemics, fires, economic crises, and growing competition from Armenians and Greeks. A small circle of affluent families shaped communal institutions, finances, and relations with Ottoman authorities, while extensive philanthropic activity - especially founding yeshivot and supporting the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel - enhanced their prestige. Many gvirim held senior positions such as Bazergans of the Ocaq, Sarrafs, tax farmers, and customs officials, while others amassed great wealth through international trade. The book explores the elite's lifestyle, pursuit of luxury, family patterns, and their far reaching economic networks, including brokerage, banking, tax farming, activity in the imperial mint, and service at the Sultan's court - alongside the dangers they faced, from political intrigue to executions and confiscations. It concludes with a detailed prosopography of dozens of gvirim, illuminating how they operated within a complex system of power, wealth, culture, and communal life. Editors: Translator: 435 pages.…
