Every final year undergraduate nursing student who represents the future first line health care provider in the 21st century is required to have an in-depth knowledge of the principles of human genetics and their application to a wide variety of clinical problems. A descriptive cross-sectional design with convenience sample of 34 final year undergraduate nursing students were recruited from the nursing program, School of Health Sciences of Universiti Sains Malaysia. The findings shows 65% had an adequate level of knowledge regarding PGS. The attitudes score indicates 62% of the respondents significantly more supportive of PGS. The results from simple linear regression analysis indicated that the attitudes score is significantly and linearly related with the knowledge score (R2=0.48, P0.05) with 95% confidence. Hence, increasing knowledge score portrayed more supportive attitudes towards PGS. The study suggest that although the attitudes score is significantly and linearly related with the knowledge score, the future first line health care providers need to be better educated about genetics.…

The effect have long-term consequences on post-stroke patients. The impact of stroke on health related QoL may be disastrous; and stroke can affect multiple domains of life. However, there is a dearth of understanding of how stroke affects the quality of life (QoL) of post-stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation. The study was conducted based on the mode of grounded theory using semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was guided by constant comparative method, in which verbatim quotations were catalogued into essential concepts by use of codes developed interatively to reflect the data. Reports obtained were findings from 11 post-stroke patients (6 women and 5 men) aged 50 to 70 years which solicited their perspectives on post-stroke QoL. Themes emerged were impact of stroke on QoL, adaptation and coping strategies, and social support and interation. These findings were consistent with prior research indicating the measures of stroke-related QoL should include awareness and education of the post-stroke patient to cope with the consequences of stroke and disabilities.…

There were 74 students (33 nursing students and 41 medical students) randomly selected to participate in this study and a self-administered questionnaire was given and collected at the same time. Independent t-test was used and p-value < 0.05 was accepted statistically significant. The finding from this study revealed that overall, nursing students were more knowledgeable about CAMs, possessed positive attitudes, and more willing to practice CAMs in clinical area compared to medical students. Null hypothesis was rejected at 5% significant level. It is suggested that the inclusion of CAM in nursing curriculum will prepare nursing student as a good future nurses who is knowledgeable to respond patient's questions related to CAM therapies. …

Despite breast cancer is primarily a woman's disease, there is little attention paid to describe these treatment side-effects experienced by young adult breast cancer women. Thus, highlighting young breast cancer women depression, anxiety, and stress level during adjuvant therapy treatment is crucial. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the association between ages or the time after initial diagnosis and the level of depression, anxiety and stress among young adult breast cancer women. This is a descriptive study on young adult breast cancer (BC) women undergoing adjuvant therapy in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM). Data was collected by self-administered questionnaire. A total of 21.6% (n=11) young breast cancer women undergoing adjuvant therapy experienced depression, 51% (n=25) with anxiety, and 11.8% (n=6) of the young adult breast cancer women with stress. Study shows that more than 10% of young adult BC women suffered from depression, anxiety and stress. These results suggest that young adult BC women are affected by psychological burden.…
