Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents excerpts from a speech given by the author, Senator Leigh, on the House floor in 1855. The author was faced with the important duty of casting a vote to determine the next United States Senator from the great State of New York. The decision was not one to be made lightly. The United States Senator was a highly prestigious and influential position, second only to the Presidency in power and importance. The author deeply felt the weight of his choice for such an office and the impact it would have on the future of not only his state but on the United States as a whole. Moreover, this decision was made at a time of tumultuous political unrest, with the increasing tensions between the North and the South over the issue of slavery being a chief concern. The author reflects on the characteristics required of a man suitable to lead and represent the great state of New York on this platform. He outlines the importance of qualities such as honesty, capability, and faithfulness to the interests of both the state and the nation. The authorâs discourse also includes compelling arguments for his views on the critical issues of the day, including the common school system, the Bible in education, and the concept of âhigher law.â This book offers an important and unique look into the political landscape and moral dilemmas of the United States in the mid-1800s through the lens of a powerful speech from an influential political figure. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
