Paperback. Zustand: New. Robert D. Leighninger, Jr., believes there may be a model for municipal building projects everywhere in the ambitious and artful structures erected in Louisiana by the Public Works Administration. In the 1930s, the PWA built a tremendous amount of infrastructure in a very short time. Most of the edifices are still in use, yet few people recognize how these schools, courthouses, and other great structures came about.Building Louisiana documents the projects one New Deal agency erected in one southern state and places these in social and political context. Based on extensive research in the National Archives and substantial field work within the state, Leighninger has gathered the story of the establishment of the PWA and the feverish building activity that ensued. He also recounts early tussles with Huey Long and the scandals involving public works discovered during the late New Deal. The book includes looks at individual projects of particular interest--""Big Charity"" hospital, the Carville leprosy center, the Shreveport incinerator, and the LSU sugar plant. A concluding chapter draws lessons from the PWA's history that might be applied to current political concerns. Also included is an annotated inventory of every PWA project in the state. Finally, this composite picture honors those workers and policymakers who, in a time of despair, expressed hope for the future with this enduring investment.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In this comprehensive survey combining architectural and social policy studies, Leighninger reappraises the enduring achievements of public investment during the New Deal era and argues that, though these initiatives produced the lasting backbone of the U.S. infrastructure, the value of these long-range investments are now being forgotten. In response, he systematically assesses the schools, housing, bridges, roads, power plants, courthouses, hospitals, museums, stadiums, zoos, parks, and other public facilities built under the auspices of the New Deal, most of which are still in use today. Leighninger's study concludes that the physical accomplishments of the New Deal have served as the core of the U.S. education, health, recreation, transportation, justice, and civic administration facilities for decades. These findings, he contends, will not only remind current generations of their indebtedness to the New Deal programs but also spark renewed debate about the long-range implications of public works versus pork barrel politics. …

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The New Deal's Legacy: How Franklin Roosevelt's Programs Transformed America, Built Defense Infrastructure, and Prepared the Nation for War Against Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, Inspiring Confidence to Tackle Today's Complex Challenges and Crises. This compelling narrative explores the multifaceted initiatives of the New Deal, designed to combat the Great Depression while simultaneously laying the groundwork for America's military readiness during World War II. Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration implemented a series of innovative programs that not only created jobs but also revitalized the economy. These efforts were crucial in constructing warships, airports, and armories, which became essential for national defense. The training of non-commissioned officers and pilots ensured that the U.S. military was prepared to face formidable adversaries. The story highlights the remarkable contributions of legendary groups such as the Tuskegee Airmen and the Women's Airforce Service Pilots, whose bravery and skill played a vital role in the war effort. Additionally, the establishment of dams provided the necessary resources for the burgeoning aircraft industry on the West Coast, ultimately facilitating the development of the atomic bomb. The narrative also delves into the lives of influential figures and the organizations that emerged during this transformative period. It illustrates how a diverse array of programs was rapidly assembled, showcasing the resilience and ingenuity of a nation in crisis. The far-reaching impacts of these initiatives serve as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a society unites to confront challenges. As contemporary issues arise, the lessons learned from this era inspire confidence that similar collective action can address today's complex crises. This book is a testament to the enduring legacy of the New Deal and its role in shaping modern America. This item is printed on demand.
