The contents are clean, crisp and fresh. Contemporary plain unsophisticated calf, rubbed and faded with double blind fillets round the perimeter, three corners lightly bumped with the boards peeping through, the spine with five raised bands ( bindng cords slightly exposed), later ink hand written paper label, joints cracked but sound. White endpapers, the front pastedown with the armorial bookplate of Richard Clark Esq. ( 1739-1831) Chamberlain of London, a post he held for thirty-three years. Overall, a very good copy. Sir Robert Leycester(1614-1678), antiquary was born in Cheshire. Educated at Dasenose College, Oxford, and took the Royalist sied in the Civil War.' Historical Antiquities in two books . ' is renowned for its historical research and accuracy. However, the publication of the work led to a vitriolic controversy as the book questioned the legitamacy of Amicia , the wife of Ralph Mainwaring, one of Leycester's ancestors.
