Lippmann was one of the most influential American journalists and political commentators of the twentieth century, a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist whose work was deeply influential in shaping contemporary debates about democracy, the press, and US foreign policy. Early Writings, introduced and annotated by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., gathers Lippmann's formative essays from the Progressive Era and First World War period, when he was developing his core ideas about liberalism, public opinion, and democratic governance that would remain central to his later writings. The association with Neil and Susan Sheehan is particularly resonant. By 1970, Neil Sheehan had become one of the major American reporters on Vietnam, and within a year would be central to the New York Times publication of the Pentagon Papers; Susan Sheehan, meanwhile, was established as a New Yorker writer working in the tradition of documentary literary journalism. Lippmann's inscription links the Sheehans to an elder statesman of American journalism at a moment when questions central to Lippmann's oeuvre (the formation of public opinion, the limits of official knowledge, and the centrality of the press to democracy) were being tested during the US government's war in Vietnam.
