Plein veau, dos à nerfs orné, filet doré d'encadrement et médaillon doré central sur les plats (reliure de l'époque, plats et mors un peu frottés). Rare édition abrégée de l'un des principaux écrits du prélat italien Aloisio Lippomani (c.1500-1559) qui acquit une grande réputation par "sa vaste érudition et sa remarquable aptitude pour les affaires" (Larousse). Ce vaste panorama de l'histoire des saint, dont la version complète fut publiée à Rome de 1551 à 1560 en 6 volumes in-4, contient de nombreux détails sur les martyrs et sur les "sectes des hérésies". "Ouvrage où l'on trouve plus de critique qu'on n'en rencontre d'ordinaire, et où l'auteur a conservé une foule d'anecdotes précieuses tirées des Grecs et des Latins" (César Cantu, "Les Hérétiques d'Italie").
