Besonders bekannt wurde er durch den nach ihm benannten sogenannten Lockhard-Plot, als er quasi Botschafter Englands während der Oktoberrevolution war. Durch den ihm unterstellten Agenten Sidney Reilly wurde im Auftrag des britischen Auslandsgeheimdienst ein Anschlag auf die Führungsriege um Lenin geplant, der zusammen mit Trotzki liqudiert werden sollte. Der Plan kam aber nicht zur Ausführung, da zeitgleich bereits, angeblich durch die Anarchistin Fanny Kaplan, ein Anschlag auf Lenin verübt worden war. Der Plan Lockhards und Reillys war den Sowjets aber bereits durch Spitzel bekannt geworden. Während Reilly fliehen konnte, wurde Lockhart verhaftet und zum Tode verurteilt, dann aber gegen den in England verhafteten Maxim Litwinow ausgetauscht. Sprache: de.
