Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is a cautionary book by an Australian fire investigation officer that will come as a "shock and surprise to many". He tells the true stories of "incendiarism, arson, pyromania and sheer carelessness" that lead to the setting off of a fire alarm, and he explains the investigations that go on afterward to determine the cause and identify the fire-raisers. Illustrated with sections of black & white photographs. From what I can tell, there was never a U.S. edition of this U.K. book. Edges are slightly browned and there's a bookseller label on front pastedown, but a very good copy in a very good, slightly browned and edgeworn dust jacket, rubbed and a little faded on spine panel.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Jacket design by Fred Marcellino (illustrator). Book Club Edition. A sweeping multigenerational historical novel tracing the decline of imperial China and the upheavals of the twentieth century through the life of Spring Moon and the Chang family of Soochow (Suzhou). First published during the early wave of popular American historical fiction centered on modern Chinese history, the novel blends family saga, court culture, reform politics, revolution, and social transformation from the late Qing era through the Cultural Revolution. The volume includes detailed character lists, decorative chapter openings, and illustrated endpapers mapping the family compound by Timothy Tsao. This copy retains its original pictorial dust jacket with author photograph on rear panel. Book condition: Very Good. Sound binding with clean text block and bright gilt spine lettering. Light shelf wear at spine ends and corners; faint rubbing to boards; pages clean and supple with no writing noted beyond an affixed ownership bookplate on the front pastedown/endpaper 'From the Library of Gladys V. Ailshire'. Dust jacket condition: Good to Very Good. Jacket remains unclipped in appearance though issued as a Book Club Edition; moderate edge wear, several small closed tears and chips at crown and corners, light creasing and rubbing, and a few small scuffs visible on rear panel. A solid, attractive reading and collectible copy of a widely read historical novel that retains its original jacket and decorative features. Edition/printing determination: Book Club Edition, indicated by the 'Book Club Edition' statement on the jacket flap; lacks a first-edition number line or stated first printing points associated with the trade edition. Bette Bao Lord (born Bao Shuqin, 1938) is a Chinese American author and memoirist best known for works exploring modern Chinese history, diaspora identity, and cross-cultural experience. Born in Shanghai, she emigrated to the United States in 1946 when her father served the Chinese Nationalist government. Her memoir Eighth Moon recounted her family's separation during the Communist revolution and informed much of the emotional and historical background for Spring Moon. Married to diplomat Winston Lord, she became an influential interpreter of Chinese culture for American audiences during the post-China-opening era of the 1970s and 1980s.
