A la fin on lit su…r le dernier feuillet imprimé : Il a été tiré du présent ouvrage 20 exemplaires sur Japon numérotés de I à 20. Notre exemplaire n'est pas numéroté et est imprimé sur beau papier (qui n'est pas un Japon mais un beau vélin légèrement teinté). Le frontispice est quant à lui tiré sur papier Japon (il s'agit d'une reproduction d'après Félicien Rops). Louis Protat est né à Châtillon-sur-Loing (Loiret) en 1816. Il étudia les lettres et le droit au collège de Sens puis à Paris. Il achète l'étude de son patron tandis qu'il devient rapidement membre du Caveau (1847). Devenu membre titulaire en 1848, il devint un des chansonniers les plus applaudis de cette société. Ses productions sont souvent badines et grivoises, sa poésie et ses chansons se distinguent par la variété des sujets, la correction de la forme, et la richesse étincelante de la rime. Il fut sept fois Président du Caveau. Il mourut à Paris en 1873. Pierre Larousse parle dans son Grand Dictionnaire de son péché de jeunesse : Examen subi par Mademoiselle Flora etc. publié en 1864. Il sera réédité plusieurs fois de manière clandestine, avec ou sans illustrations. Référence : Dutel, Bibliographie des ouvrages érotiques publiés clandestinement en français entre 1920 et 1970, n°1534 (qui donne un tirage à 20 ex. sur Japon sans rien préciser de plus). Louis Pine-à-L'Envers was a… pseudonym of the French poet and chansonnier Louis Protat (1819-1881), who is today chiefly remembered for his erotic writings. One of his best-known works is Serrefesse, first published in 1864. The book was later placed in the notorious Enfer ("Hell") collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the library's restricted section for prohibited an erotic literature. Pagination & size: (6), 85 pp. 20 × 14.5 cm. Weight: 0.300 kg. Contemporary half brown morocco, with marbled paper-covered boards and matching corners, gilt decoration to the front board and spine in the Art Deco style. Minor rubbing to the board edges. Internally well preserved; leaves slightly toned with occasional small marginal spots. An attractive copy. Two book plates: Exlibris Arvid Eriksson & Exlibris Bo Eriksson.

Louis Protat was born in Châtill…on-sur-Loing (Loiret) in 1816. He studied letters and law at the college of Sens and Paris. He bought the study of his boss while he quickly became a member of the Caveau (1847). Became a titular member in 1848, he became one of the most celebrated songwriters of this society. His productions are often playful and dirty, his poetry and his songs are distinguished by the variety of subjects, the correction of form, and the sparkling wealth of rhyme. He was seven times President of the Vault. He died in Paris in 1873. Pierre Larousse speaks in his Grand Dictionary of his sin of youth: Review suffered by Mademoiselle Flora etc. published in 1864. It will be reissued several times in a clandestine way, with or without illustrations.
