Original Cloth. Zustand: Good. Shepard, E.H. (illustrator). First Edition. New illustrated edition of a book published by Cape in 1932. Originally published by Sampson, Low in 1882. Illustrated boards have rubbing and bumping to corners and spine. The spine is faded and discoloured with some damp staining which also affects the left side of the front panel and the bottom of the rear panel. Page edges are browned with a little staining to the top edges. The decorative endpapers are lightly browned with staining along the hinge to the front endpapers. School prize writing on reverse of front free endpaper. Illustrations by E.H.Shepard and a sheet advertising an exhibition of the original drawings is laid in. No jacket. First printing of this edition.

Contains 187 printed pages of text with archive monochrome illustrations and photographs throughout. Tiny rubs to the softened spine ends, ghosting to the end papers, foxing to the page edges, ink name and address to the front free end paper. Very Good condition book in scarce near Very Good condition dust wrapper with 5 mm piece of paper missing to the top of the spine, nicks and chips to the edges and corners, 3/6 to the spine. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection, this preserves and prolongs the life of the paper, it is not adhered to the book or to the dust wrapper. Member of the P.B.F.A. Shepard's illustrations, 8vo., pp.519, pictorial green cloth lettered in cream, top edges green, frontispiece and pictorial title vignette, b/w plates, pictorial endpapers; contemporary ink ownership autograph to reverse of frontispiece, foxing to fore-edges and (just lightly) to endpapers, a very good copy, in a price-clipped pictorial dust-jacket, with foxing and toning to the pale paper, and chipping to extremities, with loss at head and tail of spine, repaired with the clipped section from front flap, with staining from now-removed sellotape to reverse, and also small missing section to front lower margin.
