Entwickelt hat ihn Roland Barthes in seinem einflussreichen Buch Am Nullpunkt der Literatur, später wurde er zum Tool in der diskursiven und konzeptuellen Formulierung verschiedenster architektonischer Praktiken (ob projektbezogen, theoretisch, spekulativ, kritisch oder akademisch). Der Sammelband Degree Zero in Architecture erkundet, wie die Vorstellung eines Nullpunktes, die Fragen der Form, des Werts und der Autorschaft verknüpft, ein kritisches Nachdenken über architektonische Praktiken und ihre Formalisierung angestoßen hat und dieses auch weiterhin vertieft.
