Story of young newspaper reporter and wife who canoe the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers as a way of publicizing the State of Washington Golden Jubilee, leaving behind a fascinating chronicle of river life during the pre-damn and pre-interstate highway era. The Photo supplement covers many interesting subjects, such as working boats, riverside residences, and activities along shore. For example, page 146: "Range cattle. The editor placed more emphasis on the Missouri because of the Lynd's description of enchantment and romance they experienced on that winding, slow moving river, that gave them a sense of wonderment as they rounded each new bend. On the other hand, they were not hesitant in expressing much disappointment in the character of the wide Mississippi. The book is from the Lynd reports to the Tacoma Times in 1939. A singular item. Folio (21 3/4 x 14 inches). 38 leaves. Stiff wrappers. Some soiling and foxing to wrapper but very attractive.In celebration of Washington State's Golden Jubilee, Bob and Louise Lynd of Tacoma, Washington, decided to canoe from Montana to Louisiana. This is a scrapbook chronicling that journey. Inside are pasted dozens of newspaper stories concerning the Lynd's various adventures on that trip. The compiler of this scrabook, an "FZ", spent quite some time on the cover. Aside from the wording already mentioned there is also "Tacoma's Own Ambassadors of Good Will" and "Lewis and Clark a la 20th Century". There is also a large map of their journey (in red, blue and black) and a charming drawing of them sitting in a canoe.Their 3,500 mile journey in part retraced the path of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Lynds, travelled in a tiny canoe supplied by Henry Foss and built by Earl & Floyd Willits. The Lynds, Bob was a former newspaper reporter, also wrote a series of articles, exclusive to the Tacoma Times, relating their experiences in publicizing Washington's Jubilee celebration to the states bordering the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. The Willits Brothers handcrafted their wooden canoes in Tacoma, later Day Island, from 1908-1967. In 2006 a book about their famous trip was published.…
