Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a detailed exploration of the Burmese and Arakanese calendars, delving into their historical evolution, methods of calculation, and areas for potential reform. The author traces the origins of these calendars to ancient Hindu astronomy, highlighting the influence of the Surya Siddhanta and the Metonic cycle. The book thoroughly examines the intricate rules and calculations used to determine the length of the year, month, and day, providing valuable insights into the astronomical principles that underlie these calendars. The author also discusses the challenges posed by the differences between the tropical year and the mean lunation, and explores the various methods used to reconcile these discrepancies. Furthermore, the book sheds light on the religious and cultural significance of the Burmese and Arakanese calendars, particularly in relation to the timing of Buddhist festivals and the agricultural cycle. The author argues for the need to reform the calendars to better align with the natural rhythms of the seasons, preserving their cultural relevance while improving their accuracy. Overall, this book offers a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of the Burmese and Arakanese calendars, their historical context, and their contemporary significance. It is a valuable resource for scholars, astronomers, and anyone interested in the cultural and historical development of timekeeping systems in Southeast Asia. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …
