On p. viii, Francis Crick is acknowledged as follows: "Our work was greatly stimulated by discussions with FRANCIS CRICK, STANLEY MILLER, and LESLIE ORGEL; which for us meant some 'selection pressure' to look for more continuity in molecular evolution." Manfred Eigen was awarded one-half of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1967, the other half shared by Ronald Norrish and George Porter "for their studies of extremely fast chemical reactions, effected by disturbing the equilibrium by means of very short pulses of energy."
