This copy inscribed, "With the Author's Compts., Dunlugas, 9 Aug. 1884". Defence of the conduct of Hicks Pasha in the "débâcle" (ODNB) at Kashgil, referred to as either Battle of El Obeid, or the Battle of… Shayka, by a fellow veteran of the Bombay Army; "As an old brother officer, anxious to maintain the honour and credit of my friend and comrade, and on behalf of those left to mourn the loss of one who no longer lives to defend himself, I have put together some extracts from the Blue Books, Egypt 1883 and 1884, and from official and private documents in Hicks's own handwriting, leaving the world to judge.". Hicks's force of 8,000 Egyptian regulars, 1,000 bashi-bazouk cavalry, 100 tribal irregulars, and 2,000 camp followers was described by Winston Churchill in The River War as "perhaps the worst army that has ever marched to war".
