Handsome gold illustration of plant material and Joseph Banks on the front cover. Dated 1909 on title page. No date on copyright page. 244 pages, followed by 2 large, fold-out maps. A signature of s…tub-cut pages holds the maps in. These have not been cut from the text, but are only in place to bolster the maps. Good condition. Binding is strong and square, with some light rubbing to the cloth at the corners. Pages lightly toned, with some foxing to the maps and endpapers. A previous owner's personal bookplate affixed to the front attached endpaper, along with a few small pencil notes. No other marks or writing to be found. Overall good condition. This book is from the collection of Thomas Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy was an influential ecologist, field biologist, and activist; former head of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, World Wildlife Fund, and advisor to the United Nations and Smithsonian Institution. He is credited with introducing the term biological diversity to the mainstream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world.
