Atget Paris compiles 840 documentary photographs made by the French master Eugene Atget between 1897 and 1927. Organized according to the twenty arrondissements and historic quarters of Paris, the work mirrors Atget's own topographical cataloging system to record disappearing architectural motifs, courtyards, shop window vitrines, public fountains, street vendors and urban peripheries ahead of the city's mid-twentieth-century transformation. The project was curated in collaboration w/ the Bibliotheque Nationale, the Mission du Patrimoine Photographique, the Musee Carnavalet and the Institut Francais d'Architecture. Photogravure separations were produced by Imprimerie Blanchard et Fotimprim in Paris and the printing was executed in Farigliano, Italy by Milanostampa. Parallel introductory essays and photographic annotations by Laure Beaumont-Maillet provide the historical apparatus in both French and English. Eugene Atget, 1857-1927, was a pioneering French photographer whose systematic documentation of Paris bridged nineteenth-century commercial documentary photography and early modernist aesthetics, and whose work was later preserved and championed by Berenice Abbott and Man Ray. Laure Beaumont-Maillet, a French art historian and Chief Curator of the Department of Prints and Photography at the Bibliotheque Nationale, places Atget's campaign within Charles Baudelaire's idea of the urban flaneur and examines how systematic documentary cataloging shaped early modernist aesthetics. …
