Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Adolphe Quetelet, a Belgian mathematician, astronomer, statistician, sociologist, and polymath, and his multifaceted work in a variety of fields. Quetelet made major contributions to statistics and laid the groundwork for sociology. His theoretical work in probability laid the foundation for the statistical study of social phenomena, and he is credited with being one of the first to use statistical methods in the social sciences. Through this approach, Quetelet sought to discover the 'average man' and to reduce social phenomena to mathematical laws. The book places Quetelet's work within its historical and intellectual context, providing a detailed overview of his life and the development of his ideas. Along with a rich portrayal of Quetelet's personal and professional life, the book offers an extensive study of his scientific work and influence.
