Octavo, original decorated boards with blue cloth backstrip, xvi, 298 pp. (last blank), frontispiece and twenty plates. Boards moderately rubbed and a little wear affecting the extremities, inner hinges split (but not detached), very good condition overall. One of the better biographical accounts of life in the Escadrille Squadron, comprising letters from the front: 'these letters were written to members of the author's family without thought of publication and the author is still very much in doubt as to whether they should be published. They have been printed almost exactly as they were written except for the omission of some personal names and of the more private matters.' Major Biddle had an advanced career, with Escadrille number 73, Escadrille Lafayette, 13 Aero Squadron and Fourth Pursuit Group of the American Expeditionary Forces. His account is generously illustrated, and plates include René Fonck with his Spad, Captain Georges Guynemer, insignia of the 73 and Lafayette Escadrilles, a German Rumpler, and crashes on the Ypres sector. Noffsinger 121.
