Erstausgabe
Oblong folio (425 x 298 mm). Lithographed title-page executed in gilt, 6 tinted lithographed plates (one with printed tissue overlay), and one folding plan. Contemporary full calf with giltstamped covers and cover title. Cloth pastedowns. Rare edition with luxury title-page: a fine railway album showing the final section of the Habsburg Southern State Railway from Trieste to Nabresina, completed in 1857. This elaborate work was the product of a collaboration between three great professionals of the age: the photographer Emilio Maza (1824-90), the lithographer Albert Rieger (1834-1905), and the editor and lithographer Giuseppe Malovich (1823-74). The album displays the five viaducts between Barcola and Nabresina conjoint with a view of the Roman limestone quarry of Nabresina which provided the building material for these structures, including a plan of the railway network from Trieste to Nabresina. First published in 1857, the album saw two subsequent editions in Milan, 1855-77, and in Piacenza, 1864. The present (undated) edition must be one of these two, the latter distinguished from the former merely by the title-page. Indeed, the title-page of the present issue is even more lavishly adorned than that of the first edition, including allegorical figures, two miniatures, and an elaborate floral border. - A good example of the technico-artistic publishing so popular in the period, presenting major government infrastructure in an artistic way through appealing views, enriched with plans and technical elevations. - All editions are rare, and only a single library copy is traceable online (at the Biblioteca civica Attilio Hortis in Trieste). - Binding professionally restored. Paper faintly waterstained at right margin. The images very well preserved. - Nebehay/Wagner 708. De Farolfi, Catalogo delle stampe triestine dal XVII al XIX secolo 624. Not in OCLC.
