First edition of this uncommon, self-published tome, this copy inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Doug with best wishes Manfred Selchow, Dec. 4, 1998." The second of Selchow's acclaimed "bio-discographical" works, following his study of Edmond Hall. Described by the great Stanley Dance in Jazz Times as "a loving tribute to one of the Swing Era's best trombonists. More than a portrait of Dickenson alone, the book amounts to a revealing monograph of a not untypical jazz musician's life in our tormenting century. The hazards of travel, the changeable employment opportunities, tough working conditions, and a somewhat fickle public, these partly explain the use of such opiates as Cutty Sark and pot." Octavo.
