Première édition, rare, de l'ouvrage dans lequel le physicien suédois Manne Siegbahn (1886-1978) résume ses travaux sur la spectroscopie par rayons X, qui lui valurent le prix Nobel de physique en 1924. Manne Siegbahn étudia à l'Université de Lund. Dès les années 1910, il s'intéresse à la spectrographie de haute précision. En 1916, il met au point avec Stenström, le premier spectromètre à rayons X sous vide, qui permet d'augmenter considérablement l'intensité du rayonnement et de parvenir à des mesures de précision qui sont à l'origine de nombreux développements dans la théorie quantique et la physique atomique.
