Il pane del boia di Marco Marengo ha il pregio di riproporre, con gli stilemi propri ed originari di questo autore, un avvenimento che ha dei fondamenti storici (le milizie di Facino Cane) frammischiandoli a un plot dove la narrazione conosce momenti di intenso lirismo e inequivocabili tratti cari al più puro genere fantastico. Beffardo e disincantato, il romanzo si dipana su differenti dimensioni temporali, senza mai confondere il lettore ma seminando sapientemente, tracce ed enigmi che riaffiorano dalla terra a cui, perfino Tino, anti-eroe per eccellenza, non può sottrarsi. Ed ecco che il mistero della Rocca di Lerma, gli inquietanti infernot e quel pane rovesciato che, si dice, venisse dato al boia dopo che aveva compiuto il suo crudele lavoro, diventano parte integrante degli avvenimenti che, con un ritmo sempre più serrato, coinvolgono il lettore spingendolo nel cuore stesso del mistero dove gli occhi del buio non sono che una lancia avvelenata, puntata al cuore dellignaro che osa avventurarsi in quelle gole.
