Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 2nd Edition. "Beschrijvinghe ende Historische verhael vant Gout koninckrijck van Guinea, anders de Gout-custe de Mina genaemt leggende in het deel van Africa." -Pieter de Marees -Amsterdam: Michiel Colijn, 1617 -Oblong 8vo (landscape format) -Title-page with large engraved allegory of Africa (woman with cornucopia and crocodile for the Nile) -Later vellum binding. -99 (of 104) with 5 pages supplied in facsimile (1E1, 1G1, 1K4, 1L1 and 2C1) -19 (of 20) illustrations with one supplied in facsimile Second edition of Pieter de Marees s famous Description and Historical Account of the Gold Kingdom of Guinea one of the earliest and most detailed first-hand European accounts of West Africa, especially the region of present-day Ghana. Pieter de Marees's Beschrijvinghe ende Historische verhael van het Gout Koninckrijck van Guinea (1602) is the most important European work on West Africa of the seventeenth century. A Dutch merchant sailing from Enkhuizen, little else is known about De Marees apart from this account of his voyage to the Gold Coast around 1597. Written for merchants and policy makers in the newly independent Dutch Republic, it was soon translated into Latin, French, and German, influencing and shaping European views of Africa. Images copied from his illustrations would be used by the cartographer Blaeu, and other illustrators, long into the 17th Century. The work describes the Akan people of modern-day Ghana and the Gold Coast, offering a remarkably detailed view of society. It includes descriptions of political and social structures, trade, religion, and even local hairstyles, memorably illustrated in a famous plate. De Marees's description of the Akan remains a key primary source for historians and anthropologists today. Being a merchant, he focused on the region's valuable commoditiesgold, ivory, and pepperand included a phrasebook to aid future traders. His observations on war captives being held as slaves within African societies predate, and in some ways anticipate, the transatlantic slave trade that would expand later in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The title-page allegory of Africa would have been immediately recognisable to contemporary readers: a crocodile for the Nile, symbol of danger and mystery, and a woman representing the fertility and abundance of the continent. The oblong octavo format was typical of Dutch vernacular travel literature intended for a wide readership, but as such copies were heavily read and worn. Complete copies are now uncommon on the market.…

Hardcover. Zustand: See Description. Early 17th-Century Illustrated Account of the West Coast of Africa A rare, partially complete, example of this early Dutch voyage to Africa - Pieter de Marees's travels to Guinea in 1600-1602. All original. Small quarto. Modern half calf over marbled boards, leather spine label. [2],152 (of 232) pages. Hand-colored engraved title vignette. 9 engraved plates (of 18). Lacks the map of northern Africa. Early 17th-Century Illustrated Account of the West Coast of Africa A rare, partially complete, example of this early Dutch voyage to Africa - Pieter de Marees's travels to Guinea in 1600-1602. All original editions of Hulsius's volumes are quite rare in the market. This is the third edition of Part VII of Hulsius's collection. The first edition of the Hulsius/Marees appeared in 1603, with a second edition in 1606. The present work focuses on aspects of African culture and society as observed during the voyage of Dutch merchant Pieter de Marees to the Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana) in the early 17th-century. The volume documents interactions with local peoples, illustrating details about their customs, including fishing techniques, trade practices, and geography of the West African coast. A chapter titled "Wie die Manns Personen sich schm cken und was sie f r ein Kleydung gebrauchen" ("How the men adorn themselves and what clothing they use"), discusses the decorative practices, attire, and the significance of personal embellishment among people in African societies. An accompanying engraved plate shows various male and female hairstyles and headgear of the people of Benin. The male heads, titled "Capita Hominum" (Men s Heads), and the female heads, titled "Capita Mulierum" (Women s Heads), represent diverse and stylized depictions of how individuals adorned their hair or wore specific ornaments, possibly indicating social or cultural roles. The engraved plates in the work are very interesting, being somewhat crude copies after De Bry. Tiele goes so far as to call Hulsius's engravings "weak" imitations of De Bry's illustrations. However, given the publication history and rarity of the Hulsius volumes (which are much rarer than De Bry), from the standpoint of printing history the present plates are quite fascinating. The engravings present herein mostly depict African people and are clearly shaped by European ideas of exoticism. They aimed to provide readers with visual insight into the cultures encountered by Dutch explorers and traders. Such images were influential in shaping European perceptions of Africa, though they clearly lacked nuance or any hit of cultural sensitivity. Plates present: No. 1. Capita Hominum / Capita Mulierum. Head dress styles. No. 3 1/2. A European ship and African people in an adjacent canoe bartering. One of the Africans on board the ship admires himself in a large mirror. No. 4. Large group of Africans in a market place. In the center a European man unrolls a large cloth for locals to purchase. No. 5A. Religious ceremonies. Three men at lower left enjoy a feast. Another man beats a drum as two woman dance or perform a religious ceremony. In the background additional groups appear engaged in ceremonies. No. 5B. Illustration of various customs. An African king's house in the background, with a long drum and water pot before the entrance. No. 6. Three African men wielding spears, a shield and other weapons. A village burns in the background. No. 7. Depicts violent punishments and executions. No. 8, 9, 10. African fishing techniques. Levinus Hulsius's collection of voyages, the Sammlung von Sechs und Zwanig Schiffarten, which his heirs extended to 26 volumes after his death in 1606, can be considered a competitor, or perhaps more accurately, a supplem. In das goldreiche Königreich Guineam, in Africa gelegen, so sonsten das Goldgestadt von Mina genan[n]t wird, welches von den Portugalesern ungefähr vor 200 Jahren erfunden. Frankfurt a. M.: Hulsius Erben 1624" -Rare 3rd edition -Complete - Title page, Folding Map, Pages 1-232, 19 (of 19) plates -20 x 15 cm -Modern full leather binding -Good condition but significant toning to pages. Hulsius publications were produced for a mass readership and therefore often used cheaper paper. For this reason very few copies survive as they were often not kept. They are much rarer than the more lavishly produced editions by the De Bry family which were cherished due to their value. -All Hulsius parts are rare, and those that survive frequently are lacking plates or maps. Engraved vignette on general title; [8], 127 pp, [1]; [1], 26 leaves of half-page engraved illustrations. Occasional light browning. Marginal dampstaining to final 20 text pages in first part. This volume covers the first-hand account of Pieter de Marees's first Dutch expedition to Guinea, 1600-01. Pieter de Marees' history of Guinea, originally published in 1602, is one of the earliest detailed European descriptions of West African society and an essential reference for the precolonial period. De Marees wrote primarily about the Gold Coast (Ghana), but his work also covers Cape Verde (Senegal). This work he "discusses the Slave Coast and the Portuguese participation in the traffic". (Postma, The Dutch in the Atlantic Slave Trade, 1600-1815, p. 13). These trade ties would drive European interest in the region leading to the propagation of the Slave Trade. Brunet 1338.
