Important anthology of poetry by black poets, assembled when students at the University of Michigan complained because none of the anthologies used in introductory poetry courses included black poets. Some of the poets anthologized here for the first time, became very famous over the course of time. The book's pages are lightly toned but clean without marks, creases, stains, wrinkles, foxing or tears. There is an ink smudge on the inside front cover and another on the inside back cover. Very little soiling to outer covers but there is light rubbing. Very light wear to edges of covers and spine. A very presentable copy. (Note: Photos may show a flash reflection.) In 1976 Margaret Esse Danner (1915-1984) published her final major work, The Down of a Thistle, which she dedicated to Black Poet Robert Hayden. Much of her poetry is about the relationship between Black Africa and Black America. Some poems are a homage to Langston Hughes, who also displayed a strong connection to his African heritage and inspired and influenced Danner throughout her life.
