Maldito Coronavirus!: Mapping Latin American Musical Responses to the Pandemic Moment offers an expansive survey and analysis of local and regional musical responses to the global coronavirus moment. The authors situate this emergent phenomenon within interdisciplinary explorations of music-making on social media platforms, transnational culture flows, emotional intimacy in digital spaces, and the intersections of music, health, and community. The first study of its kind, Maldito Coronavirus! emphasizes the singularity of this cultural moment by examining the myriad ways musicians, promoters, activists, and listeners artistically, emotionally, and organizationally responded to the challenges of living through a global pandemic. Highlighting examples from Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, and across the Hispanic Caribbean, this book analyzes lyric, affect, and performance and explores the ways participatory digital platforms facilitated cultural sustenance and musical distribution at a time when physical gatherings were unfeasible. Maldito Coronavirus! draws on over a year's worth of digital ethnography as well as insights from folklore, history, ethnomusicology, and the growing literature on music and wellbeing to highlight the locally-contingent ways music-makers responded to a global crisis.

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Henry Watterson (1840--1921), editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal from the 1860s through WWI, was one of the most important and widely read newspaper editors in American history. An influential New South supporter of sectional reconciliation and economic development, Watterson was also the nation's premier advocate of free trade and globalization. Watterson's vision of a prosperous and independent South within an expanding American empire was unique among prominent Southerners and Democrats. He helped articulate the bipartisan embrace of globalization that accompanied America's rise to unmatched prosperity and world power. Daniel S. Margolies restores Watterson to his place at the heart of late nineteenth-century southern and American history by combining biographical narrative with an evaluation of Watterson's unique involvement in the politics of free trade and globalization. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. In the late nineteenth century the United States oversaw a great increase in extraterritorial claims, boundary disputes, extradition controversies, and transborder abduction and interdiction. In this sweeping history of the underpinnings of American empire, Daniel S. Margolies offers a new frame of analysis for historians to understand how novel assertions of legal spatiality and extraterritoriality were deployed in U.S. foreign relations during an era of increased national ambitions and global connectedness.Whether it was in the Mexican borderlands or in other hot spots around the globe, Margolies shows that American policy responded to disputes over jurisdiction by defining the space of law on the basis of a strident unilateralism. Especially significant and contested were extradition regimes and the exceptions carved within them. Extradition of fugitives reflected critical questions of sovereignty and the role of the state in foreign affair during the run-up to overseas empire in 1898.Using extradition as a critical lens, Spaces of Law in American Foreign Relations examines the rich embeddedness of questions of sovereignty, territoriality, legal spatiality, and citizenship and shows that U.S. hegemonic power was constructed in significant part in the spaces of law, not simply through war or trade.
