Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near fine. First. THE de BOURDIGALLE--DOUBLE--QUENTIN-BAUCHART--RAHIR--ODIOT--BURTON COPY. Two volumes. Lyon: Jean de Tournes, 1547. First edition, Mortimer B. Octavo (6 ½" x 4", 161mm x 101mm). [Full collation available.] Bound in later (late-XVIIIc?) polished red morocco with a triple gilt fillet border and corner rosettes. On the spine, five raised bands. Title gilt to the second panel. Gilt fillet to the edges of the boards. Gilt inside dentelle, marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block gilt. Green silk marking ribbons. A very little rubbing at the extremities. Vol. I bowed. The odd passage of foxing, perhaps based on soiling. Altogether a lovely, unusually tall set (>25mm at the lower edge, with the lower deckle preserved at, e.g., I.F4-6). Book-labels to the front paste-down of vol. I (top-to-bottom): Léopold Double (gilt armorial to oval red morocco, "EX MUSEO L DOUBLE"); Ernest Quentin-Bauchart ("EX/LIBRIS/QUENTIN/BAUCHART" gilt to oval red morocco); paper label of "A.W." (beneath a lion rampant couped atop a torse, within a beveled triple-fillet rectangular frame), completed in ink manuscript "850"; Edouard Rahir ("Ex/Libris//Edouard/RAHIR" on an open book gilt to octagonal red morocco). To the verso of the first free end-paper of vol. I (top-to-bottom): Ernest Odiot (oval paper label with a cipher of two E's reversed around an O), Henri Burton ("EX-LIBRIS/HENRI BURTON/LYON-GENÈVE" gilt to rectangular red morocco). On the title-page, ink-stamps "[?] De Bourdigalle" with the motto "Non est mortale quod opto." flanking the date. Faded inscription to the head of the title-page in an early (XVIc?) hand, perhaps beginning "domus pro." i.e., indicating an institutional ownwerhsip. Labels of Double, Quentin-Bauchard and "A.W" only to the front paste-down of vol. II. Marguerite, Queen of Navarre (1492-1549) was a humanist on the level of Castiglione and Erasmus, with whom she corresponded (he more enthusiastic about her than she him). Born to Charles d'Orléans, Count of Angoulême (a great-grandson of Charles V of France), she married (after an unpleasant and unproductive first marriage) Henry II of Navarre in 1526. Her greater stage was, however, the court of her brother, who ruled as François I, one of France's most celebrated kings. There the brother-and-sister court attracted Leonardo da Vinci and Sebastiano Serlio, Rabelais and Ronsard. The collection of poems she wrote as meditations and as intellectual exercises is in the present set published for the first time, guided through the press by her valet de chambre Symon Silvius, alias Jean de la Haye, who was himself a humanist, having translated Marsilio Ficino's commentary on the Symposium of Plato into French. The title is a play on the author's name; "marguerites" are daisies. Collections of poems have long been referred to as garlands: florilegium and anthology. Thus we might render the title as Flowers of the flower among princesses. The most famous of the works is the first, "Le miroir de l'âme pecheresse" or Mirror of the sinful soul, first published in 1531 after the death of her only son, Jean, at the age of six months. Marguerite's humanism and worldliness are on display in the Suyte (i.e., vol. II). Here she writes a history of nymphs and satyrs in the mode of Ovid, epistles to her brother the King of France, eight portraits of courtiers -- four ladies and four gentlemen, even a comedy and a farce. Perhaps the most consequential is the last long work of the collection, La Coche (The Coach). Marguerite wrote it in 1541 while setting up a marriage for her daughter, and commissioned a series of illustrations from Bernard Salomon (1506-1561), a Lyonnais miniaturist who often worked with de Tournes. A rich and polyvalent expression of the cultivation of a noble lady, printed by one of the great Lyonnais humanist publishers, the Marguerites has long been a bibliographic prize.
