Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book details the creation of the Standard Reference Material (SRM) 3201, a magnetic-tape system created by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to ensure interchangeability of digital data between computer installations. SRM 3201 is the first SRM for inch (12.65 mm) 22- and 48-track serial serpentine magnetic tape cartridges. It enables users to compare the performance of their own data media to a fixed standard, thereby ensuring high levels of reliability and accuracy when exchanging information. The book explores the significance of SRM 3201 within industry standards for magnetic tape, providing detailed descriptions of various tests used to calibrate the system, including saturation, overwrite, resolution, and peak shift. The author emphasizes the importance of precise measurement techniques in maintaining data integrity, making this book an essential guide for professionals involved in magnetic tape technology and data management. Through its analysis of SRM 3201, this book underscores the critical role of standardization in facilitating the secure, reliable exchange of digital information within a rapidly evolving technological landscape. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
