Soft cover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Edwin Markham wrote the Introduction to this 72 page volume of poetry. There is a facsimile signature following his writing which is dated 1916. There are watermarks to the rear cover and the last 8 pages of the book, however, the marks remain in the margin and do not reach the text. There is also a previous owner's embossed stamp on the title page. The covers are blue with gilt lettering and decoration on the front cover and plain on the spine and back cover. There is an approximately 3/4 inch tear to bottom of the joint between the front cover and spine. The cover edges are chipped an seem to have some paper loss.

Hardcover. 260p., semi-coated paperstock with frontis, preface, introduction and appendices. The lineup includes poems by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, Joaquin Miller et alia. Find two fullpage plates, a photoportrait of Pelton and an imaginary portrait of him standing under heavenly light. There are several steel-engraved vignettes and a small photo of the "First Baptist church and first public school in California, 1819" (even decades later it is a single building resembling a warehouse); a relevant newsclip is laid in that has offset badly. Also find pencilled brackets and the address of the no longer extant church. Pastedown bears a generic bookplate with another label farther on, the 9x6 inch maroon cloth casing is uglified by shelfwear and fray, dampstaining, and a dimming to near-illegibility of the gilt titling. Hinges are OK, text is clean and sound. Gilman is represented by a single contribution, "Thanksgiving", a twelve-line poem. Pelton was San Francisco's superintendent of public schools and founder of the first public schools in California. His son was the architect of Pelton Homes which can still be found in the Haight.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover, no dustjacket, a beautiful copy of this vintage classic, green cloth binding with bright gilt title and illustration on front cover and spine, the illustrations by W. F. Stecher include a color frontis, there are a few minor flaws which detract little from the book's appearance: the paper remnants of an article about this book on the inside of the front cover and a price written in ink on the blank front end-paper, a small dark mark on the bottom outer page-edge and a tiny amount of softening/rubbing at the corners and spine-ends, also, a short edge-tear to the bottom of page 93 which is discreet and does not affect the text, the binding is clean and tight, the gold titles are bright and the contents are fine, a nice gift/collector's copy.
