The award sent her to England for one year to study at Cambridge, which contributed to her earning the Ph.D. in New Testament from the University of Chicago in 1924. She became the first woman to hold a full professorship at Union, and became Jessup Professor of English Bible and Dean of Women Students in that Seminary."Lyman was a meticulous exegete whose focus was interpretation of biblical texts in their contexts and the relevance of biblical texts for contemporary lives and communities.
