Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The House With the Twisty Windows' is a gripping one-act drama set against the turbulent and harrowing backdrop of the Russian Revolution. Located in a cellar in Petrograd during the height of the Red Terror, the play follows a small group of British subjects who have been taken captive. As they await their fate in the damp, subterranean shadows, the characters are forced to confront their fears, their prejudices, and the stark reality of the political upheaval transforming the world above them.Mary Pakington skillfully constructs a claustrophobic atmosphere where the 'twisty windows' of their prison serve as a metaphor for the distorted and dangerous world outside. The narrative focuses on the psychological toll of imprisonment and the varying ways individuals respond to the threat of death, ranging from desperation to profound acts of self-sacrifice. This poignant 'episode' is a masterclass in tension and character study, offering a vivid depiction of the personal costs associated with historical conflict. Through its sharp dialogue and haunting setting, 'The House With the Twisty Windows' remains a significant work of early 20th-century drama, capturing the fragility of human life during times of total social collapse. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
