Il principio ordinatore deve ricercarsi, con i Pitagorici e Platone, in rapporti e sequenze numeriche, cioè in entità extramusicali che colleghino i suoni al macrocosmo? Oppure deve nascere dalla percezione della musica reale, come ritenevano gli empiristi di età classica e Aristosseno? È proprio questo dilemma che ancor oggi rende affascinante l'armonica. Oltre gli aridi calcoli dei quali si fa scudo, essa si rivela come una provincia liminare del pensiero, al crocevia tra acustica, astronomia, matematica, geometria e psicologia. Il documento più completo di questa scienza è l'"Armonica" di Claudio Tolemeo (ca 100-178), da lui scritta forse verso la fine della sua vita. Il trattato si presenta come la summa di circa sei secoli di storia dell'armonica e propone un nuovo equilibrio, debitore dell'ilemorfismo aristotelico, in cui alla ragione e alla percezione vengono riconosciute prerogative distinte e complementari. L'opera si conclude, in un grande sforzo di sistemazione enciclopedica, con una serie di analogie tra l'armonica e la psicologia, l'etica, la politica, l'astronomia.

I miti musicali del mondo classico sono gli scampoli di quel tessuto, e tra essi rovista questo libretto, che narra di musicisti umani e divini, famosi e ignoti, fortunati e sventurati; e di una musica che può salvare o uccidere, costruire mondi o distruggerli.

The apparatus of this new edition includes all the emendations and conjectures that have been proposed by many scholars since Ingemar Düring's 1932 edition and takes into account a few manuscripts that escaped the previous editor's otherwise remarkable recensio. The boundaries of some quotations from ancient authors are redefined and many misprints corrected. Finally, the text of the Byzantine epitome of the Commentary is here edited for the first time.
