In den WarenkorbSoftcover. Zustand: Very good. First edition. Inscribed on the title page: "To Bill + Betty, with love + respect, Chris, December 1984." With his patented smiley face sketch. Uncommon signed. A book that describes in detail 96 species of mammals along the Oregon Coast, "not simply an identification guide . . . but a dynamic portrayal of their habits and habitats" built from fieldwork and literature review. Chris Maser (his website) is an interesting figure who for 20 years was a research scientist with the Bureau of Land Management and US Forest Service. He argued very early on for a holistic approach to forestry (some of his key research showed that small mammals like voles were essential to spreading truffle spore which is essential to the mycorrhizal health of trees--thus the whole ecosystem needed to be conserved), and he was discounted and ostracized by the old guard leadership; over these differences, he resigned in 1985 and turned to writing and has been prolific since then. Jerry Franklin, his co-author, is a particularly renown forest ecologist now at the University of Washington, dubbed "the father of new forestry." Quarto in perfected bound pale wraps with title and illustration printed in green. With a foreword by Murray L. Johnson, Curator of Mammals at the Puget Sound Museum of Natural History in Tacoma. Illustrations and maps throughout in black and white. A 32-page "literature cited" bibliography at rear. Very good with browning/toning to spine, light rubbing, and light upturn to front corners. A nice find for marine mammal and Northwest ecology collectors. Signed.…
