The articles published in this volume are based largely on the papers delivered at the international symposium on 'Urbanity, Identity Construction, and Humanism: Music, Art, and Culture in the Age of the Council of Basel.' The symposium profited from a fruitful dialogue conducted between scholars and performers at Basel University's Musicology Department during the 'Waning of the Middle Ages' Festival (August 2011). Our volume has been enlarged with the addition of further original articles that not only expand the overall picture of the topic, but enrich the book's underlying theses on the cultural history of music and the arts in the fifteenth century. Here, with a common set of questions, we have assembled articles from general historians and musicologists, as well as historians of art and literature, in order to search for possible answers to the question of identity construction in the fifteenth century. The early age of humanism, the internationalization of culture, the Council and conciliarism, and the urbanity of the late Middle Ages: all are mainstays of the culture-historical edifice that these articles, with their contrasting methodological approaches, demarcate and carry out in an interdisciplinary spirit. The articles published in this volume are based largely on the papers delivered at the international symposium on 'Urbanity, Identity Construction, and Humanism: Music, Art, and Culture in the Age of the Council of Basel.' Neuware - Die Idee dieses Buches rührt von der Überzeugung her, dass das Hören als ein Vermögen aufgefasst werden kann, das zum Politischen disponiert, ausrichtet, orientiert, ver-fügt. Der Ausdruck Politik des Hörens ist im Sinne eines Genitivus subjectivus zu lesen, womit das Hören von Musik als eine sinnlich-intellektuelle Haltung begriffen und diskutiert wird, der selbst eine eigene politische Valenz innewohnt. Im Fokus dieses Buches, das aus dem Nachdenken über die Rolle des Hörens im Werk des Komponisten Luigi Nono entstanden ist, steht somit weder das ästhetische Tun im Sinne einer unmittelbar politischen Intervention, noch die Auseinandersetzung mit der politischen Position des Komponisten: Vielmehr geht es darum, jene Dis-Position zum Politischen, zu der das Hören von Nonos Musik auffordert, theoretisch zu erfassen und an ausgewählten Beispielen zu diskutieren. Im Grunde spielte sich das Politische in Nonos Musik gar nicht so sehr in der unmittelbaren Referenzialität auf Reales, sondern vielmehr im 'Weltbezug' (Albrecht Wellmer) des Klanges selbst ab, in der kompositorischen Konkretion, in der Einladung anders und Anderes zu Hören. Nonos Musik disponiert zum Hören und das Hören ist bei ihm immer auch Dis-Position zum Politischen. Das Politische in Nonos Musik kommt immer erst ans Licht, wenn die Zuhörer:innen sich im Hören der Musik selbst ausgehend von einer 'Aufteilung des Sinnlichen' (Jacques Rancière) als hörende 'Gemeinschaft' (Jean-Luc Nancy) begegnen und dabei ihre pluralen Erfahrungen teilen: Das Politische des Hörens liegt demzufolge darin, Sinn miteinander zu teilen. Denn, wie Hannah Arendt formuliert hat: 'Politik entsteht im Zwischen und etabliert sich als Bezug'. Die subversive Potentialität der Politik des Hörens besteht in dem In-Beziehung-Treten selbst der Zuhörer:innen und im diskursiven Verhandeln über die eigene Dis-Position zum Politischen: Denn das Politische der Musik liegt im Mit-ein-ander-hören. …
