Gustave Garrigou ouvre le palmarès de cette épreuve qui se déroule alors sur 100 kilomètres et derrière entraîneur. Depuis, le championnat couronne un coureur classé parmi les meilleurs du moment. Enfin le plus souvent, car il y eut de belles surprises ! En effet, des coureurs pratiquement inconnus ou ne figurant pas dans les favoris inscrivent parfois leur nom au palmarès, comme Godinat en 1932 ou Marcelak en 1948. Pendant cinq jours, Callac et sa population vivaient au rythme des fêtes de la Sainte-Barbe, dont le critérium était la principale attraction.
