The Tall Interpreter was first published in 1946: this edition incorporates later poems from the same oeuvre. "This is the complete text of the body of work I started to write in 1946 after the war ended and I was made redundant from the Bristol Aeroplane Factory. The newly liberated working class - that was how we saw the results of the 1945 Labour victory - the newly liberated working class needed an Epic Poetry. I undertook to write it" (introduction). Maurice Carpenter was, like Gascoyne and George Barker, a graduate of the Parton Street Bookshop school, and author of A Rebel in the Thirties (1976).
